The idea of Cildo Meireles’s project “Insertions into Ideological Circuits” (1970), and specifically his Banknote Project, in which stamps and inscriptions turned money itself into a carrier of political expression, has found a vivid continuation in Russia. Against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine, new protest actions have emerged: anti-war slogans and stamps on banknotes, which circulate through the financial system and spread their message beyond the reach of censorship.
By pointing a phone camera at a banknote of various denominations, one can now see an AR layer with a protest inscription.
In this way, the symbols of power are reappropriated.
